Tooth extractions and wisdom teeth management
Our dentists try to save teeth whenever possible; however, there are times when teeth require removal. These instances include:
- removals requested by orthodontists as part of an orthodontic treatment plan
- non-restorable teeth – teeth that have been severely decayed or damaged and can no longer support a filling or crown
- non-vital teeth that are not suitable for root canal treatment, usually because the remaining tooth is weakened or deeply fractured
- teeth that are unable to fit into the dental arch (for example, impacted wisdom teeth)
- infected teeth
- teeth that are severely affected by periodontal disease
- as a treatment option if preferred by our patient.
Our dentists will assess the tooth or teeth, ensuring that quality dental x-rays are available to assess potential complications. Then, options for extraction will be carefully explained to the patient, including the risks and benefits of each approach.
Simple extractions
Our dentists will manage straightforward extractions at our practice under local anaesthesia. The patient may undergo the procedure with or without the use of nitrous oxide gas.
Complex extractions
We typically refer complex extractions to a local Maxillofacial Surgeon specialist. Examples of complex cases include:
- the removal of anatomically challenging teeth
- impacted teeth
- most wisdom teeth
- any patient with a complex health history
- very young children
- patients who require or prefer sedation or general anaesthesia for dental procedures.
Important to know
- Teeth removal is sometimes a surgical procedure and, as such, carries risks. Our dentists will explain the risks and benefits in detail so each patient can make an informed decision about their treatment.
