Dental crowns, inlays, and onlays
Dental crowns, inlays, and onlays are dental restorations built outside the mouth and bonded onto teeth. Made of strong and durable materials, they provide greater protection to teeth than dental fillings.
Crowns, inlays, and onlays can be made of:
- stainless steel
- gold
- other precious metal alloys
- resin
- porcelain
- combinations of metal and ceramic.
Our dentists will discuss what options are suitable for you.
Dental crowns
A dental crown is best described as a “tooth-shaped helmet”. It is placed over an existing tooth core to restore the tooth’s original shape, strength and appearance. A crown fully covers the part of the tooth visible above the gum line.
Our dentists place crowns for various reasons, including:
- to protect a tooth that has been weakened by decay or multiple large direct fillings
- to protect a tooth that shows signs of cracking
- to protect a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
- to restore a tooth that has been severely worn down
- to cover discoloured or misshapen teeth
- to restore a dental implant
- in cosmetic smile makeovers.
Inlays and onlays
Dental inlays and onlays are less extensive crowns that cover less of the visible tooth structure. They are used when the natural tooth only requires partial protection.
