Protect your dental implants with these pro tips from the Australian Dental Association.
- Dental implants can replace one or more missing teeth inside the mouth.
- An implant will look and feel very similar to your natural tooth, and it should be cared for in a similar way.
- Although an implant cannot develop tooth decay, it can be affected by gum disease in the same way as natural teeth.
- Smoking increases your risk of developing gum disease around both teeth and implants.
- It’s important to care for your gums, as they and the underlying bone hold your implant in place.
- When brushing, make sure your toothbrush gently cleans your gums around the implant to prevent gum disease from developing.
- Your dentist or specialist who placed your implant should advise you of the best tools to clean around and between your implant or implants and teeth.
- This may be floss, an interdental brush, a water flosser, or a combination of tools.
- See your dentist regularly to ensure your dental implant, gums, and any teeth remain healthy.
