Protect your teeth with these pro tips on dealing with a knocked-out tooth from the Australian Dental Association.

  • If your tooth or the tooth of someone you  know is knocked out, remember the following:
  • Stay calm and find the tooth.  Pick it up by the crown.
  • If dirty, rinse the root of the tooth gently  in milk or saline. Do not scrub the root.
  • Determine if it is a baby or adult tooth. Baby  teeth should not be replanted in the mouth.
  • If it is an adult tooth, replant the tooth  back in its original position in the mouth  using slow but firm pressure.
  • Make sure it is the correct way around.
  • Bite down gently on a soft cloth  to keep the tooth in place.
  • If unsure whether it is an  adult tooth, place it in milk,  saliva or saline to transport it to the dentist.
  • Do not transport the tooth dry.
  • Always seek dental care immediately.
  • Brush your teeth twice each day  and floss at least once daily,  and visit your dentist regularly to  prevent problems and keep on smiling.
