Protect your teeth with these pro tips for a tooth-friendly diet from the Australian Dental Association.

  • A diet low in sugar can help you to avoid tooth decay and pave the way for a healthy mouth.
  • Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth, producing acid, which attacks your teeth, causing tooth decay.
  • To prevent tooth decay, the World Health Organisation recommends adults consume less than six teaspoons of sugar per day.
  • When buying foods and drinks, make sure to read the sugar content listed on the nutrition label.
  • Look for foods and drinks with labels that report less than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams.
  • Avoid sweet, sticky, or chewy snacks and opt for vegetables, nuts, or cheese instead.
  • For tooth-friendly drinks, ditch the sugary drinks and choose water or milk.
  • Drinking water after meals and sugary drinks helps to rinse the mouth and dilute the sugar and acids.
  • Choose tap water over bottled water.
  • Drinking fluoride-containing tap water helps to protect and strengthen your teeth.
  • And do not forget to brush twice each day and floss at least once.
  • And visit your dentist regularly to prevent problems and keep on smiling.
