Orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment is a field of dentistry that specialises in realigning the teeth to improve function and aesthetics. Many children and teenagers receive orthodontic treatments, and even adults can benefit from orthodontic tooth movement at any age.
Orthodontic treatment can involve:
- removable or fixed appliances worn in the mouth for varying amounts of time
- the placement of orthodontic braces
- clear orthodontic aligners. These are removable throughout treatment and are very popular with adults receiving orthodontic treatment
- surgical treatments, including removing crowded teeth and exposing unerupted or impacted teeth.
Why is orthodontic treatment helpful?
Teeth can be misaligned for many reasons: crowding, spacing, drifting, or discrepancies in the size and shape of jaws. Sometimes, there are gaps or spaces between the teeth, often as a result of necessary tooth extractions.
Any of these can cause multiple issues, including:
- speech impairments
- damage to the soft tissues
- trouble biting or chewing
- difficulty in cleaning resulting in dental decay or gum disease
- issues with confidence and self-esteem.
A course of orthodontic treatment can resolve these issues, sometimes in conjunction with other treatments.
